The new release “Patterns For A Future Humans” came about as a natural working process. Barry Chabala had just moved across the USA to New Mexico and was steeped in a new environment.
Lance Austin Olsen had been working on a large series of collaged and folded paintings that had the look of pattern forms that resembled fragments of figures. The physical actions needed to create these forms had their own sound elements which steeped Olsen in a different kind of ‘new environment’
Much of the working sounds were recorded and this also included mutterings and moanings when things were not working as expected. These ‘field recordings’ in the studio formed the basis for the two tracks that were sent to Barry for his guitar interventions.
Imagining all this as a soundtrack of sorts for a future race, Barry plays a concerto to guide them. Conversing, mumbling, probing, excavating; concluding with a melody of foresight and anticipation.
This duo recording resulted in a surprising combination of music concrete and solo guitar, melding two totally different forms into a unified work.
