I just love working with Lance. His concepts run so deep that its so easy to just get lost in there somewhere and just let music pour out. As far as explaining it, or knowing what Lance is doing, I have no idea nor do I want to know. It might spoil the surprises! I will just let Lance tell you about this one….. B.C.
A Field Of Wild Flowers For Our Departed Souls.
During our enforced lock down I was thinking about the vast fields of our lives, how they intersect, layer and change, the changes that have happened due to the millions of Covid related deaths and how this has affected our individual and collected fields of life.
I imagined an entire field of wild seeds resting in the ground waiting for the change that would allow each one to pop through the ground at a slightly different moment with a slightly different sound, like an audio version of a colour field painting. As temperatures rise the seeds become plants and finally open into a field of individual flowers creating an overall field with all its slight but important variations.
These fields and natural layering of seeds, organic material and time relates to a painting approach that I often adopt. The first layer could be made from a set of pencil dots spread over the surface, then maybe a light wash spread over the dots, then another layer of something over the surface. Gradually building layer upon Layer to become a finished field with each layer having its part and sometimes showing through clearly and other times disappearing but all working together to create the whole with all its slight dips and changes and tones. So the many layers of activity becomes one work but each layer plays a critical role.
I do not want to get too esoteric about the process or the end result but this is the clearest way I have of describing a process that will create an integrated work without instructions as to notes, tones or anything other than length of each movement, and also to produce the work in a series of added and sometimes subtracted layers.
